Investigating vehicle collisions requires thorough data collection. The CrashScan app, used with an OBDLink MX+ Bluetooth adapter, provides a powerful tool for accessing and interpreting data from a vehicle's Event Data Recorder (EDR), often called a "black box," where supported. CrashScan helps investigators identify, extract, and analyze stored accident data, aiding in the validation of insurance claims and providing crucial insights into liability.

Contextual Accident Reports:

A successful CrashScan provides detailed information on impact severity, orientation (front, rear, side), and contextual data, including:

Accident severity (minor, moderate, severe)
EDR trigger thresholds
5 seconds of pre-crash data (speed, brake/accelerator pedal use, steering)
Occupant count and seatbelt status
Estimated repair cost
Likelihood of structural crush damage
Injury risk thresholds (whiplash, injury duration)
G-force context compared to daily activities

*Injury risk algorithms utilize stored acceleration values, scientific literature, and databases like the National Automotive Sampling System (NASS).

Canada: No specific legislation; data is considered diagnostic and non-private, though insurers typically obtain consent.

United States: The federal Driver Privacy Act of 2015 and statutes in seventeen states (Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington) regulate EDR data access, generally requiring owner/policyholder consent except under specific circumstances.
