"Baldur's Gate 3 Steam Surge Post-Patch 8: Larian Eyes Next Big Project"

by Patrick May 21,2025

Baldur’s Gate 3 has experienced a significant surge in player numbers on Steam following the release of the much-anticipated Patch 8, setting developer Larian Studios up for success as they shift focus to their next major project.

The transformative Patch 8, which debuted last week, introduced 12 new subclasses to Baldur's Gate 3. This update not only sparked excitement among fans eager to explore these new additions but also introduced a brand new photo mode, contributing to a peak concurrent player count of 169,267 on Steam over the weekend. This is a remarkable achievement for a single-player focused role-playing game in its second year. It's worth noting that player numbers for PlayStation and Xbox are not publicly disclosed by Sony and Microsoft.

Reflecting on the impact of Patch 8, Larian's CEO, Swen Vincke, expressed optimism about the game's future. In a tweet, Vincke stated that he believes Baldur’s Gate 3 will continue to thrive, thanks to the recent player boost and the robust support for mods. This success provides Larian with the opportunity to concentrate on their next ambitious project. Vincke emphasized the challenge ahead, noting, "We’ve got big shoes to fill."

Vincke shared his satisfaction with the game's current state, saying, "Feeling good today about where we are with BG3. Patch 8 got a lot of people playing again. It took a lot of development effort but I'm happy we did it." He further highlighted the thriving mod community as a key factor in the game's ongoing success, allowing Larian to focus on crafting their next major title.

Patch 8 marks the final major update for Baldur’s Gate 3, signaling the end of a remarkable period for Larian. The game launched to critical acclaim and achieved substantial commercial success in 2023, maintaining strong sales throughout 2024 and into 2025.

Larian surprised the gaming community by announcing their decision to move away from Baldur’s Gate 3 and the Dungeons & Dragons universe to develop a new, undisclosed game. Prior to this, they teased the new project but later imposed a media blackout to concentrate on its development.

Meanwhile, Hasbro, the owner of Dungeons & Dragons, has hinted at continuing the Baldur's Gate series. In a conversation with IGN at the Game Developers Conference, Dan Ayoub, SVP of digital games at Hasbro, mentioned that with Larian stepping away, there is significant interest in the franchise. Ayoub stated, "We're kind of working out our plans for the future and what we're going to be doing with that. And actually, in pretty short order, we're going to have some stuff to talk about around that."

Ayoub did not elaborate on whether these plans involve a new full-fledged Baldur's Gate game or a crossover, such as the previous collaboration with Magic: The Gathering. However, he expressed a desire for a Baldur's Gate 4, acknowledging that such a project would require time. He added, "It's somewhat of an unenviable position. I mean, we're not in a hurry. Right? That's the thing, we're going to take a very measured approach... We've got a lot of plans, a lot of different ways to go about it. We're starting to think about, okay, yeah, we're ready to start dipping toes a little bit and talking about a few things. And I think, in really short order, like I said, again, not to over-tease that point, we're going to have some other things to talk about around that."
