Bayonetta Turns 15: PlatinumGames Celebrates Milestone

PlatinumGames is celebrating fifteen years of Bayonetta with a year-long anniversary celebration, expressing gratitude to fans for their enduring support. The original game, released in 2009 (Japan) and 2010 (globally), garnered critical acclaim for its innovative design and fast-paced action, establishing a legacy that spanned multiple sequels on Nintendo platforms.

The stylish action and creative premise of the first Bayonetta propelled the character into the ranks of iconic female video game anti-heroes. While Sega published the initial release across various platforms, subsequent sequels became Nintendo exclusives on the Wii U and Switch. A prequel, Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon, showcased a younger Bayonetta on the Switch in 2023, and the mature Bayonetta also made appearances in recent Super Smash Bros. installments.

PlatinumGames recently announced a "Bayonetta 15th Anniversary Year" for 2025, promising special announcements and events throughout the year. While specifics remain scarce, the developer encourages fans to follow their social media channels for updates.

Bayonetta's 15th Anniversary in 2025

Already underway are several anniversary initiatives. Wayo Records has released a limited-edition Bayonetta music box featuring the Super Mirror design and a melody from the game's soundtrack by Masami Ueda. PlatinumGames is also distributing monthly Bayonetta-themed smartphone wallpapers, with January's featuring Bayonetta and Jeanne in kimonos.

Fifteen years on, the original Bayonetta remains celebrated for its refinement of stylish action gameplay, introducing innovations like Witch Time and influencing subsequent PlatinumGames titles such as Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance and Nier: Automata. Fans eagerly anticipate further announcements throughout the anniversary year.
