MrBeast, the renowned YouTuber, has publicly stated his interest in saving TikTok from being banned in the United States, sparking discussions with a group of billionaires to potentially make it happen. As the deadline for TikTok in the US approaches, various influential figures are actively seeking ways to prevent the app's ban.
TikTok's immense popularity has not gone unnoticed by lawmakers, leading to President Biden signing a bill in April 2024 that mandated ByteDance, TikTok's parent company, to either cease operations in the US or sell its US business. Although ByteDance has shown little interest in selling recently, the looming ban has reignited conversations about possible solutions.
On January 14, MrBeast tweeted about his willingness to purchase TikTok to prevent its shutdown, initially perceived by some as a light-hearted comment. However, following another tweet, he revealed that multiple billionaires have contacted him to seriously consider this venture. While he did not disclose their identities, MrBeast is now actively exploring the feasibility of this ambitious plan.
Could MrBeast Save TikTok?
Theoretically, if TikTok's US operations were managed by a US-based entity, the app could continue operating in the country. The primary concern driving the ban is the potential for data shared on the app to be accessed by the Chinese government, which could also contribute to the spread of misinformation. The Department of Justice has highlighted concerns about data collection from underage users. However, the critical issue remains whether TikTok is actually available for purchase.
Despite numerous discussions about acquiring the app, it's uncertain if ByteDance would agree to a sale, even with significant financial offers. ByteDance's lawyer, Noel Francisco, has emphasized that the app is not for sale and suggested that any sale attempt might be thwarted by the Chinese government. Although ByteDance previously considered selling its stake in TikTok to avoid a ban, their stance appears to have shifted. The idea of MrBeast and a group of billionaires pooling their resources to buy TikTok is intriguing, but it remains to be seen if ByteDance—and possibly the Chinese government—will be persuaded to agree to a deal.
