Black Myth: Wukong Pauses Story for Zhong Kui

A Fresh Start with Zhong Kui

Announced during Gamescom 2025's Opening Night Live, Black Myth: Zhong Kui tells a completely new story in the Black Myth series. While many fans anticipated a sequel or DLC continuing Sun Wukong's saga, the development team wanted to "start from scratch" and craft something original.

On August 25, Game Science CEO Feng Ji shared the team's creative process behind Zhong Kui in a Weibo post. Since Wukong's launch, Feng Ji had been feeling somewhat disoriented and reflective. Despite realizing a project he had envisioned for more than two decades, he felt an unexpected emptiness rather than fulfillment.

Feng Ji explained, "No matter how much I wished I could feel happier, those emotions kept returning—especially when questions like 'Will there be DLC? Who's developing it? When is it coming out?' kept coming up."

As discussions about a Wukong DLC gained traction, Game Science co-founder Yang Qi suggested exploring a brand-new project instead. Feng Ji was both relieved and excited by the proposal, and the two quickly aligned their vision. After gaining support across the team, development on Black Myth: Zhong Kui officially began.

Feng Ji acknowledged that a Wukong DLC could have succeeded, but the team was eager to build something from the ground up. He elaborated, "A DLC is certainly feasible, but at this moment we wanted to deliver a new Black Myth experience—new heroes, gameplay, visuals, technology, and story. We want the creative freedom to experiment, break away from established formulas, and truly start over."

Will the Wukong Storyline Continue?

In the FAQ section of Zhong Kui’s official site, Feng Ji reassured fans that Wukong's "westward journey isn't over yet." However, it remains uncertain whether the continuation will take the form of DLC or a full sequel. He also recognized that many fan ideas are far more imaginative than the team’s initial concepts.

"Like you, I have a deep appreciation for the mythical world of Journey to the West—its demons, gods, and Buddhas. The legend of Sun Wukong will return in the future, in a more complete and polished form, once we’re fully prepared," Feng Ji stated.

Although how and when Wukong’s story resumes is still unclear, fans can look forward to a new adventure that continues to explore Chinese mythology and folklore. While the developers stress that the game is still early in development, many are hopeful it won’t take as long as Wukong did.
