Introducing a Highly Ambitious Endgame

As Borderlands 4's launch approaches, developer Gearbox Software has revealed extensive details about the game's mechanics and lore. They have now confirmed a highly ambitious endgame. In a July 7 interview with Game Informer, Creative Director Graeme Timmins shared insights into the post-campaign content planned for Borderlands 4.
Timmins, who contributed to Borderlands 3's endgame development, mentioned that the team looked to previous titles for inspiration. He emphasized understanding the community's expectations and assured that these elements are already integrated into the game.
"We've considered the endgame for Borderlands 4 from the very beginning and have developed exciting plans that we look forward to sharing. By applying lessons learned from both Tiny Tina's Wonderlands and the Borderlands series, we aim to deliver the finest endgame experience the franchise has seen," Timmins elaborated.
Community Builds Skill Planner While Skills Remain in Development
Beyond the eagerly awaited endgame, the community's enthusiasm is evident as fans have created a skill tree planner months ahead of the game's official release. Twitter (X) user Byrd, collaborating with Maxroll.gg, announced on July 7 that they developed a Borderlands 4 skill planner for the playable Vault Hunters Vex and Rafa.
However, Timmins responded to the post, reminding fans that all features are still subject to adjustments. He commented, "This is an incredible tool! Please keep in mind that the game is still in development, and all skills are SUBJECT TO CHANGE :) We're currently balancing and refining all characters, so the gameplay seen in demos may differ from the final launch version. Just a friendly reminder :)."
"Welcome to Kairos" Trailer Unveils New Game Setting Details
The second installment of the BEYOND THE BORDERLANDS video series, named "Welcome to Kairos," features the Borderlands 4 Narrative team introducing players to the prison planet Kairos. The seven-minute video, released on July 8, offers deeper insight into the game's environment, new factions, their leaders and commanders, and the background of the main protagonist, the Time Keeper.
While the Time Keeper governs the planet as a ruthless dictator, Vault Hunters work to unite various factions to challenge his rule. These groups include The Outbounders, The Augurs, The Electi, The Ripper Queen, and Idolater Sol of the Fadefields. Each faction operates with its own motivations, and players must persuade them to join the Crimson Resistance and help overthrow the oppressive regime.

Regarding the creation of the main antagonist, Managing Director of Narrative Lin Joyce explained that the team revisited previous series villains to determine how to make the Time Keeper distinctive. Narrative Director Sam Winkler added that they intended the character to project an aura of menace, exercising control over the population at his discretion. He stated, "We aimed to create a villain who represents a fresh archetype for the franchise—one who feels ever-present without becoming tiresome."
Joyce further described the game's vast world, noting the return of features fans have requested and emphasizing that the game welcomes both veteran players and newcomers. "This installment marks a pivotal moment in our universe, linking back to earlier titles while also pointing toward future directions, making it an essential playthrough," she detailed.
With Gearbox pushing boundaries by eliminating loading screens and enhancing the comprehensive weapons system, Borderlands 4 is positioned to become the definitive title in the series. Borderlands 4 launches on September 12, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. For the most current updates on the game, be sure to read our related article below!
