Capcom Enhances iOS Versions of 'Resident Evil 4', 'Village', and '7' with Online DRM

by Christian May 01,2025

At TouchArcade, we've always appreciated updates to premium mobile ports for their enhancements in optimization and compatibility. However, Capcom's latest update, rolled out just an hour ago for *Resident Evil 7 biohazard* (Free), *Resident Evil 4* Remake (Free), and *Resident Evil Village* (Free) on iOS and iPadOS, has introduced an unwelcome change. This update includes an online DRM system that verifies your purchase history each time you launch the games. Upon starting the game, you're prompted to confirm if you own the game or any DLC, which then allows access to the title screen. Selecting 'no' results in the game closing immediately.

Previously, these games could be enjoyed offline without any issues. Now, a stable internet connection is mandatory just to start playing, as the DRM check must be completed before accessing your save files. This shift is particularly frustrating because it detracts from the user experience that was once seamless and unrestricted.

I personally tested all three games before and after the update. Before today's update, they launched and played offline without a hitch. Post-update, the mandatory online check is now in place, and opting out results in the game shutting down.

While some might not mind this change, I find the addition of online DRM to games already purchased to be a significant downgrade. It's my hope that Capcom will reconsider this approach, perhaps implementing less intrusive methods for purchase verification or limiting checks to less frequent intervals. Such changes can impact the appeal of Capcom's premium-priced ports on mobile platforms.

If you haven't yet experienced these titles, you can still try them for free. *Resident Evil 7 biohazard* is available on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS [here](#). You can find *Resident Evil 4* Remake on the App Store [here](#), and *Resident Evil Village* [here](#). For detailed insights, read my reviews of these games [here](#), [here](#), and [here](#).

Do you own these modern *Resident Evil* games on iOS? What are your thoughts on this significant update affecting all three titles?
