Captain America's Latest Film Approaches $300M Worldwide Despite Sharp Domestic Decline
Captain America: Brave New World is inching closer to the $300 million mark at the global box office. However, a significant 68% drop in domestic revenue during its second weekend raises concerns about the MCU film's ability to break even. According to Deadline, with a production budget of $180 million, the movie needs to reach approximately $425 million to break even.
The Anthony Mackie-led action film exceeded expectations with a $100 million domestic haul over the Presidents Day weekend. Yet, its second weekend saw a domestic take of just $28.2 million, echoing the steep decline experienced by 2023's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which also struggled to break even.
After two weekends, Captain America: Brave New World has amassed an estimated $289.4 million worldwide, with $141.2 million from domestic markets and $148.2 million internationally, according to Comscore figures. The film added $63.5 million globally during its second weekend.
Despite being the biggest release of 2025 so far, the film's sharp second-weekend drop was unexpected, especially with no major competing blockbusters on the horizon. Senior Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian remarked to Variety, "This is the new normal for Marvel movies. There’s still no denying these movies have appeal. But a second weekend drop of 68% reflects less audience enthusiasm than you’d expect from Marvel."
According to Deadline, projections suggest that Captain America: Brave New World might reach around $450 million globally.
The film debuted to lukewarm reviews, with IGN's Captain America: Brave New World review awarding it a 5/10, stating, "Captain America: Brave New World feels neither brave, nor all that new, falling short of strong performances from Anthony Mackie, Harrison Ford, and Carl Lumbly."
Marvel Studios and Disney are banking on the film to regain momentum and reverse a downward trend for MCU movies (excluding the successful Deadpool & Wolverine from last year). They hope this will build anticipation for upcoming releases like Thunderbolts* in May and The Fantastic Four: First Steps in July.
