Choosing Wakasa or Otama in Assassin's Creed Shadows: Key Mission Impacts

by Emma Oct 16,2026

Not every choice in Assassin’s Creed Shadows carries weight, but deciding to confront Wakasa or Otama in “The Tea Ceremony” mission shapes the rest of your campaign.

Both tea ceremony participants raise suspicion, but only one choice simplifies the mission, making your path through the quest significantly smoother.

Should You Confront Wakasa or Otama in Assassin’s Creed Shadows?

In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, confronting Wakasa after the tea ceremony is the right move. She’s the Golden Teppo of the Onryo, and identifying her leads to a straightforward kill, simplifying the mission.

When you confront Wakasa, she invites Naoe to her home for a private discussion. Upon entering, you’ll spot the kasa (straw hat) from the Onryo’s prologue hanging on her wall, confirming you’ve chosen the correct target.

After a tense exchange, Naoe can grab Wakasa’s Teppo from the wall and shoot her point-blank, swiftly concluding the mission with a cinematic flourish.

What Happens If You Confront Otama in Assassin’s Creed Shadows?

Choosing Otama as the Golden Teppo in Assassin’s Creed Shadows still lets you eliminate Wakasa, but it complicates the mission with a challenging stealth and combat sequence against multiple enemies.

Targeting Otama leads Naoe to pursue and kill her. A letter on Otama reveals her corruption, but letting Wakasa escape allows her to fortify herself with soldiers in Osaka castle.

To reach Wakasa, you must travel to Osaka castle, either fighting her soldiers or sneaking past them. If you’ve unlocked the Osaka Tenshu fast travel point, you’ll face only a few enemies, but the journey remains tougher than confronting Wakasa directly.

Even if you stealthily approach Wakasa for an assassination, it won’t suffice, forcing you into a one-on-one battle to defeat her.

The boss fight isn’t overly challenging, but confronting Wakasa first avoids unnecessary combat and delivers a more satisfying, cinematic kill, especially given her role in Naoe’s father’s death.

With the Tea Ceremony mission resolved, discover how to gain XP and level up quickly in Assassin’s Creed Shadows to tackle tougher challenges. Also, learn how to earn more Knowledge Points to unlock new skills for Naoe and Yasuke.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is available now on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
