Final Fantasy 9 25th Anniversary Site Hints at Switch 2 Remake Reveal
The excitement surrounding a potential Final Fantasy 9 remake has been reignited following Square Enix's launch of an official Final Fantasy 9 25th Anniversary website. The Japanese-language site commemorates the game's release on July 7, 2000, and its upcoming 25th anniversary. It teases fans with the promise of "various projects, including merchandise and collaborations," fueling speculation about a long-awaited remake.
The timing of the website's launch has not gone unnoticed, especially with Nintendo's Switch 2-focused Direct event scheduled for April 2. This has led some fans to speculate that Square Enix might announce the Final Fantasy 9 remake for the Switch 2 at the event. However, the mention of "various projects" on the website has left room for interpretation, stirring excitement and conjecture among the community.
Last year, Naoki 'Yoshi-P' Yoshida, the producer of Final Fantasy 14, addressed the possibility of a Final Fantasy 9 remake. He acknowledged the fan demand but highlighted the challenge of remaking the game due to its vast content, suggesting it might not fit into a single title. Yoshi-P's comments hinted at a potential multi-part approach similar to the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which is currently being released as a trilogy.
In early 2024, Yoshi-P further fueled speculation by announcing Final Fantasy 9-themed bonuses for the Collector's and Digital Collector's Editions of the Final Fantasy 14 expansion, Dawntrail. These bonuses include the Ark summon as a mount and a wind-up Princess Garnet minion, with pre-orders offering a wind-up Zidane minion. During PAX East, Yoshi-P teased the presence of Final Fantasy 9 references, cryptically adding, "You may have noticed a lot of Final Fantasy 9 references here, but the reason is a secret," before playfully zipping his mouth shut.
Rumors of a Final Fantasy 9 remake have persisted since a 2021 Nvidia leak that listed unannounced games, including the Final Fantasy 9 remake. While Nvidia confirmed the leak's authenticity, the list might be outdated, as it also included titles like the Chrono Cross remaster, Kingdom Hearts 4, and the Final Fantasy 7 remake for PC, all of which have since been announced or released. However, the Final Fantasy 9 remake and Final Fantasy Tactics, also on the list, have yet to be officially confirmed. Additionally, a Final Fantasy 9 animated series was reportedly in development as of June 2021, though no updates have surfaced since.
