Final Fantasy Magic: Fun MTG References Revealed

by Grace Dec 07,2025

Wizards of the Coast has been unveiling exciting details about Magic: The Gathering's highly anticipated Final Fantasy crossover this summer. Recently, a substantial batch of cards was showcased—featuring both the core set and Commander decks—delighting fans with nostalgic callbacks and unexpected inclusions from their favorite Final Fantasy titles.

This Universal Beyond collaboration delivers two distinct experiences: a Commander-focused release and traditional booster packs, ensuring plenty of content to explore. The main set spans the entire Final Fantasy series, drawing inspiration from Final Fantasy I through XVI. Meanwhile, the Commander decks spotlight four iconic games—Final Fantasy VI, VII, X, and XIV—showcasing legendary protagonists Terra, Cloud, Tidus, and Y'shtola as Commanders.

Several cards revealed during Magic: The Gathering's PAX East panel brilliantly encapsulate character arcs from the series. Final Fantasy IV's Cecil, for instance, features mechanics reflecting his transformation from Dark Knight to Paladin. The summons introduce "Saga Creatures"—a clever fusion of Magic mechanics and Final Fantasy's iconic temporary summons.

Standout cards like Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER—showcasing artwork by Square Enix's Tetsuya Nomura—visually track his evolution across Final Fantasy VII, culminating in his legendary Sephiroth, One-Winged Angel form.

No Final Fantasy celebration would be complete without Cid, and this set includes variations representing each numbered title—though opting for Final Fantasy XV's grizzled engineer over his daughter Cindy.

Following the panel, Wizards unveiled the complete decklists for the four Commander decks, prompting fans to study how these beloved games were translated into Magic mechanics. The adaptation proves impressively faithful.

Existing Magic cards receive thoughtful Final Fantasy-themed revisions. Skullclamp, for example, features Jenova Project-inspired artwork from Final Fantasy VII lore.

The Together, Forever card delivers an emotional homage to Final Fantasy X's poignant narrative, while numerous other cards discreetly reference major story moments—potentially containing spoilers newcomers should note.

Lighthearted moments aren't forgotten, with cards like Inspiring Call immortalizing one of Final Fantasy X's most meme-worthy scenes.

Creative liberties shine through cards like Clever Concealment—showcasing Final Fantasy VII's Wall Market cross-dressing escapade—and Secret Rendezvous, offering four variants depicting Cloud's Golden Saucer dates.

Dedicated fans continue uncovering subtle Easter eggs, particularly within the Final Fantasy XIV cards. The Hildibrand Manderville card cheekily references the character's signature teleportation antics, while Archaeomancer's Map replicates an actual treasure location from the MMO.

Final Fantasy XIV's community embraced these references, humorously debating Thancred's card representation and reimagining Rite of Replication's flavor text as Urianger's infamous monologue.

The Tome of Legends card perfectly captures Final Fantasy XIV's Wondrous Tails journal—complete with frustrating near-miss patterns familiar to players.

The meticulous craftsmanship evident across these cards builds anticipation for the complete set. While Commander decks received significant focus, surprises like Commune With Beavers hint at more innovative adaptations awaiting discovery.

Magic: The Gathering's Final Fantasy expansion launches officially on June 13, 2025, with pre-release events beginning one week earlier.
