Final Fantasy VII Remake Trilogy Set for Nintendo Switch 2, Square Enix Confirms
In the latest installment of Nintendo's Creator's Voice series, Naoki Hamaguchi, the director of the Final Fantasy Remake series, announced an exciting development for fans of the franchise. Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, the enhanced PS5 version of the 2020 PS4 release, will be making its way to the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.
Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, the first chapter in the expansive remake trilogy, builds significantly on the beloved 1997 PS1 classic, Final Fantasy VII. This version not only features improved graphics and lighting over the PS4 release but also includes the Intermission DLC, which introduces the energetic ninja Yuffie and her adventures in Midgar.
Currently available on PS5 and PC, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is set to leverage the enhanced capabilities of the Switch 2. Hamaguchi expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, "With the power of the Switch 2, we can now recreate Midgar with full specs." This advancement in hardware will enable the game to be enjoyed in handheld mode, making it convenient for players to enjoy it on the go, such as during commutes.
Moreover, the Switch 2 version will introduce GameChat, a feature allowing players to communicate with friends while playing and share their screens in real-time. Hamaguchi is thrilled about this portable capability, saying, "I'm very excited to see this game playable on a portable system," and he looks forward to fostering a strong partnership between Nintendo and the Final Fantasy brand.
While only Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade has been confirmed for the Switch 2 at this point, Hamaguchi hinted at the possibility of future releases, stating, "I hope players are looking forward to the Final Fantasy VII Remake series on Switch 2." This suggests that subsequent entries in the trilogy, including Rebirth and the final installment, may also find their way to the new Nintendo platform.
The Final Fantasy series has a storied history with Nintendo, having debuted on their consoles before transitioning to the PlayStation 1 with Final Fantasy VII in 1997, marking the series' shift to 3D gaming. With the remake series, Final Fantasy VII is set to return to Nintendo hardware, bridging a nostalgic gap for long-time fans of the franchise.
