"Back to the Future" Writer Rejects Prequel or Sequel

by Hunter Oct 28,2025

Original screenwriter Bob Gale has definitively shut down any possibility of new Back to the Future content - no sequels, prequels, or TV adaptations.

The backlash comes after Cobra Kai creators discussed potential interest in developing a Back to the Future television series. However, Gale has emphatically stated the franchise ended perfectly with its original trilogy.

"I don't understand why this keeps coming up," Gale told People magazine. "Do they think constant questions will magically make a new project happen? The answer remains unchanged after all these years. There won't be a Back to the Future 4. No prequels. No spinoffs. As director Bob Zemeckis always said, the trilogy is 'perfect enough' as is."

While Gale remains the gatekeeper of the franchise rights, he acknowledges Hollywood's power could theoretically override his position. However, he confirms executive producer Steven Spielberg shares his complete opposition to reviving the series.

"Steven understands and respects our stance," Gale explained. "Just as he's prevented any E.T. follow-ups, he fully supports our position on Back to the Future remaining untouched. We're grateful for that protection of the original vision."

This isn't the first time Gale has vehemently rejected sequel discussions. Earlier this year, he offered a blunt response to hopeful fans: "When people ask about Back to the Future 4, our answer remains the same - absolutely not."
