GameStop Launches Nintendo Switch 2 Amid Stapler Chaos

by Carter Dec 15,2025

Remember when retail giant GameStop accidentally damaged hundreds of Nintendo Switch 2 consoles by stapling receipts through their screens during launch?

GameStop certainly hasn't forgotten, as their latest Switch 2 advertisement playfully references the mishap while announcing new console stock arriving in stores.

"Staples not included," quips the social media post, featuring an image of the Switch 2 alongside a red stapler marked "Do Not Use On Box."

PlayWhile some customers appreciated the self-deprecating humor, others questioned why the company would highlight an expensive error that destroyed thousands of dollars worth of inventory.

IGN first broke the story about the stapling fiasco shortly after the Switch 2 launched, with most reports coming from a single Staten Island GameStop location.

Customers discovered the damage only after unboxing their new consoles at home - finding puncture marks where receipts had been stapled through the thin packaging directly into the screens.

This isn't GameStop's first joke about the incident. Their social media team previously confirmed replacements were offered to affected customers, humorously sharing a GIF from Office Space showing staplers being confiscated.

Some Twitter users demanded proof all damaged consoles were replaced, which GameStop confirmed. Another jokingly suggested auctioning off the infamous stapler - to which GameStop responded with a thinking emoji.

While GameStop maintains this was an isolated incident, IGN has heard from customers at other retailers who experienced similar damage. Many fans have criticized Nintendo's packaging design that exposes the screen to potential harm.

When contacted by IGN, Nintendo redirected all inquiries back to GameStop's official statements about the situation.
