NCSoft Scraps Horizon MMORPG "Project H"

NCSoft's plans for a Horizon MMORPG, internally codenamed "H," have been canceled, according to a January 13, 2025 report from South Korean news outlet MTN. The cancellation follows a company-wide "feasibility review" that also resulted in the termination of other undisclosed projects (codenamed "J"). The report further states that key developers assigned to "Project H" departed NCSoft, with remaining team members reassigned to other projects. The removal of "H" and "J" from NCSoft's organizational chart solidifies their cancellation.

While NCSoft and Sony have yet to officially comment, the future of "Project H" remains uncertain. The possibility of another developer picking up the project's assets is currently unknown.

A Separate Horizon Multiplayer Game Still Under Development

Despite the cancellation of the NCSoft project, Guerrilla Games continues development on a separate, unannounced Horizon multiplayer game, referred to as the "Online Project." This project, confirmed in a December 2022 Twitter (X) post, is being developed internally by Guerrilla Games and features a new cast of characters and a unique art style.

Recent job postings, including one for a Senior Combat Designer (November 2023) and a Senior Platform Engineer (January 2025), suggest a large-scale multiplayer experience is planned, potentially targeting over one million players. The Senior Platform Engineer posting specifically mentions experience with "1M+ globally distributed systems," hinting at the game's anticipated player base.

Sony and NCSoft's Strategic Partnership

The recent strategic partnership between Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) and NCSoft, announced November 28, 2023, adds another layer of intrigue. While the Horizon MMORPG collaboration fell through, this partnership could open doors for future collaborations on other Sony titles, potentially expanding their reach into mobile gaming.
