Killer Instinct Gold Joins Nintendo Switch Online Library

by Madison May 20,2025

Killer Instinct Gold has been freshly added to the Nintendo Switch Online library, bringing the excitement of this classic Nintendo 64 game to a new generation of players. This title is a port of the arcade fighter Killer Instinct 2 and joins the original Killer Instinct in the expansive collection of retro games available to Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack subscribers.

Originally released in 1996, Killer Instinct Gold was crafted by the renowned British studio Rare, which at the time was a prominent second-party developer for Nintendo. Rare's portfolio includes other iconic games like Donkey Kong Country, Goldeneye 007, and Perfect Dark. In Killer Instinct Gold, players can choose from a roster of 10 formidable fighters and engage in various game modes, mastering "hundreds of thousands of moves and killer Combos at your fingertips."

Although Rare, and thus the Killer Instinct franchise, is now under Microsoft's ownership, Killer Instinct Gold marks another Xbox Game Studios title available on the Nintendo Switch. Since the release of the Xbox One launch title Killer Instinct in 2013, there have been no announcements regarding a new sequel to the series from Microsoft.

Preorders for the Nintendo Switch 2 opened at the end of April, maintaining a price point of $449.99. The response was overwhelming, as expected. However, Nintendo has advised U.S. customers who pre-ordered through the My Nintendo Store that release date delivery isn't guaranteed due to high demand. Despite this, Doug Bowser, the President of Nintendo of America, reassured IGN that the company is poised to meet consumer demand "through the holidays."
