Live-Action Street Fighter Movie Finds a New Director

by Samuel May 19,2025

A new Street Fighter movie is in the works, and it has found its director. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kitao Sakurai, known for his work on the absurdist comedy show The Eric Andre Show, will helm the upcoming film adaptation for Legendary Entertainment. Capcom is reportedly "deeply involved" in the project, and the movie is slated for release on March 20, 2026.

This marks another attempt to bring the iconic Street Fighter franchise to the big screen. Fans might remember the 1994 film, which starred Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li, and the late Raul Julia as M. Bison. While it may not have been a critical darling, it has since become a cult classic among fans.

Details on casting are still under wraps, but it's likely that familiar Street Fighter characters will make an appearance. Initially, the project was set to be directed by Danny and Michael Philippou, known for their work on Talk to Me, but they left the project last summer. The choice of Sakurai, with his background in absurdist comedy, suggests that Legendary might be steering the film towards a more whimsical and cartoony approach. As a fan of Street Fighter's more playful elements, this shift is something to look forward to.

While we wait for more news on the movie, fans can dive into the latest installment of the game, Street Fighter 6, which recently introduced Mai Shiranui as a new fighter. For more insights, check out our comprehensive review of Street Fighter 6.
