A Marvel Rivals Player Created a Playable Doctor Octopus Concept and Fans Love It

by Owen Mar 01,2025

NetEase Games' commitment to releasing a new Marvel Rivals hero every half-season hasn't stopped a talented player from creating a playable Doctor Octopus. Reddit user WickedCube recently shared a 30-second gameplay video showcasing their impressive creation. The footage, seemingly from a testing environment, features a pre-Hulk Bruce Banner and a remarkably well-realized Doctor Octopus.

The Doc Ock model, while rough around the edges, is instantly recognizable. His eight arms allow for unique movement, enabling him to essentially "fly" by magnetizing himself to structures – a clever adaptation to the game's destructible environments. WickedCube even included custom abilities: "Havoc Claw" for melee attacks and "Wrecking Grip" for ranged combat. The post, boasting over 16,000 upvotes, highlights the impressive work of a single individual.

WickedCube's inspiration stemmed from a lack of Vanguard characters and the inherent challenge of creating Doc Ock's tentacle-based movement in 3D. A recent PSN outage and inspiring fan art provided the final push.

"Doc Ock has always been one of the coolest villains in Spider-Man, and his tentacles would be a challenge to implement," WickedCube stated. "As far as I know, they haven't been fully implemented with playable 3D movement in a game before. I thought, ‘Since I can't play right now, why not make it myself?’"

The overwhelmingly positive response has led WickedCube to plan a YouTube tutorial series and open-source the code on GitHub. A playable version is also planned for Itch.io.

Meanwhile, NetEase will release the Human Torch and The Thing this Friday, following the recent addition of Mister Fantastic and the Invisible Woman. This rapid release schedule surpasses competitors, but the vast potential of Marvel's universe continues to inspire fan creations.

WickedCube's project highlights the community's desire for more Vanguard characters. While an official Doc Ock remains unconfirmed, WickedCube is already developing concepts for Nightcrawler and Professor X. They praise NetEase's game design, calling it "the hardest thing to get right."

Marvel Rivals' Season 1 mid-season update arrives February 21st, including the new characters, balance adjustments, and more.
