Minecraft Movie Breaks Record With $72M Debut

by Claire Jan 06,2026

The Minecraft Movie has made history with a record-breaking box office debut, surpassing The Super Mario Bros. Movie to claim the highest domestic opening weekend earnings for a video game adaptation.

Featuring stars like Jason Momoa and Jack Black (who also appeared in The Super Mario Bros. Movie), this Xbox game adaptation exceeded projections with a staggering $157 million haul across North American theaters. Though The Super Mario Bros. Movie still holds the title of highest-grossing video game adaptation with its $146 million domestic launch in April 2023.

The Minecraft Movie added $144 million internationally, bringing its global opening weekend total to $301 million. With reported production costs of $150 million before global marketing expenses, Warner Bros. may already be seeing profits.

Inspired by Mojang's Minecraft—the best-selling video game ever—this Microsoft-owned sandbox phenomenon continues to dominate global popularity. The film's release coincides with special movie-themed DLC.

IGN scored The Minecraft Movie 6/10, praising Jared Hess's direction: "The Napoleon Dynamite filmmaker delivers unexpected humor and charm in this family-friendly adventure, particularly during its more controlled first half."

In contrast, Disney's live-action Snow White faces challenges after a lackluster $168.4 million global start ($77.5 million domestic). With a $250 million budget, matching Mufasa: The Lion King's surprise success seems increasingly unlikely.
