Nintendo Pledges 'All Possible' Measures Against Switch 2 Scalpers

by Christopher Feb 19,2025

Nintendo is gearing up to combat potential Switch 2 launch shortages and thwart scalpers, stating, "We are making preparations." Following the release of its latest financial report, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa addressed concerns about a repeat of the original Switch's 2017 launch shortages.

He confirmed to Nikkei, as reported by VGC, that Nintendo is implementing comprehensive strategies based on past experience to counter scalping and supply constraints. "We will take all possible measures... We are making preparations," Furukawa stated.

These preparations likely involve significantly increasing Switch 2 production. Nintendo previously highlighted robust manufacturing as crucial to outmaneuvering scalpers, a lesson learned from the original Switch's launch. Furukawa reiterated this strategy in July 2024, emphasizing sufficient production to meet demand as the primary countermeasure against resale practices. He also mentioned exploring additional measures within legal and regulatory frameworks. He further noted that the semiconductor shortages impacting Switch production in previous years have been resolved.

A Switch 2 Direct is planned for April 2nd, promising further details. Hands-on events will also be held globally.

Addressing declining Switch sales, Furukawa downplayed the impact of consumers delaying purchases in anticipation of the Switch 2, stating that while sales haven't met targets, the Switch is still performing strongly in its eighth year.

Nintendo intends to continue supporting the original Switch post-Switch 2 launch, contingent on ongoing demand. This commitment is evidenced by the planned 2025 releases of Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond on the original Switch.
