"Nintendo Switch 2 Enhances Original Games"

by Aiden May 02,2025

The long-awaited Nintendo Switch 2 has arrived, and as previously announced, it boasts impressive backward compatibility with Switch 1 games. Yet, Nintendo is taking a step further by rolling out specially enhanced versions of these games, known as Switch 2 Editions. These versions are not just about improved graphics and smoother frame rates; they come packed with exciting new features that enhance your gaming experience.

What Games are Playable on Switch 2?

Nintendo has categorized the games for the Switch 2 into three types: Native Switch 2 games, exclusive to the new console; Compatible Switch 1 games, which you can play directly on the Switch 2; and Switch 2 Edition games. These editions are enhanced versions of Switch 1 games, designed to leverage the Switch 2's advanced capabilities.

It's worth noting that this does not include the vast library of classic games available through Nintendo Switch Online, which spans titles from the NES, SNES, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, and now the GameCube.

So What Comes in a Switch 2 Edition Game?

During the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, it became clear that Nintendo is keen on offering added value with Switch 2 Editions. Take Super Mario Party Jamboree, for instance. Its Switch 2 Edition introduces Jamboree TV, a new suite of content utilizing the Joy-Con 2's mouse controls, the Switch 2 microphone, and the separately sold USB-C camera. You'll also enjoy upgraded resolutions up to 1440p in TV mode, improved frame rates, new minigames, and enhanced online functionalities.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, a cross-gen title, will support mouse controls with the Joy-Con 2 and offer multiple display modes. Choose between Quality Mode for a 60fps experience in 4K when docked or 1080p in handheld, or opt for Performance Mode to hit 120fps at 1080p when docked or 720p in handheld. Both modes will support HDR for stunning visuals.

Other Switch 2 Edition titles, like Kirby and the Forgotten Land's Star-Crossed World add-on, will introduce new story content. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom will benefit from the Zelda Notes service in the Nintendo Switch App, offering guides and game assistance. Meanwhile, Pokémon Legends: Z-A will primarily see performance and resolution enhancements.

When are the Switch 2 Edition Games Coming?

The Nintendo Switch 2 is slated for release on June 5, 2025, and that's when you can expect the first wave of Switch 2 Edition games. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom will launch their Switch 2 Editions on the same day. Super Mario Party Jamboree + Jamboree TV and Kirby and the Forgotten Land's update will follow on July 24, 2025, and August 28, 2025, respectively. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Pokémon Legends: Z-A will also launch their Switch 2 Editions sometime in 2025, though exact dates are yet to be announced.

How Much Will Switch 2 Editions Cost?

The cost of Switch 2 Editions varies. If you're new to the game, you can buy the Switch 2 Edition at retail, easily identified by its distinctive red-colored physical game case. Digital versions will feature a prominent Switch 2 logo. If you already own the Switch 1 version and want the Switch 2 enhancements, you'll need to purchase an upgrade pack from Nintendo. These packs will be available at select retailers, the official My Nintendo Store, and the Nintendo eShop, though pricing details are yet to be revealed.

Notably, the upgrade packs for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom will be included in a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership, which also grants access to online features and a classic game library.
