Nintendo Switch 2 Preorders Face Store Restrictions to Combat Scalpers
The much-anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch on June 5, 2025, and it's expected to be a highly sought-after product. To ensure that dedicated Switch players have a fair chance at securing a pre-order, Nintendo is implementing a strategic pre-order system on the My Nintendo Store. If you have a Nintendo Account, you can now register your interest in pre-ordering the Nintendo Switch 2 system and select accessories directly from the store. Once registered, you'll receive an invitation email when it's your turn to pre-order, which will be valid for 72 hours.
However, there's a twist to secure your spot: you must demonstrate your commitment to the Nintendo ecosystem. According to the fine print on the site, priority for these invitations will be given on a first-come, first-served basis to those who have been active Nintendo Switch Online members with a minimum of 12 months of paid membership and have logged at least 50 total gameplay hours on their current Switch console as of April 2, 2025. These invitations are non-transferable and will be sent to the email address linked to the registering Nintendo Account. There's also a one-per-account limit for the system and each accessory during the invitation period. You can express interest in either the base Nintendo Switch 2 system or the one bundled with Mario Kart World.
Once you've placed your order, it will be shipped after purchase, and an approximate shipping date will be provided at the time of ordering. It's important to note that Nintendo cannot guarantee release-day delivery due to processing and shipment times.
While Nintendo hasn't explicitly stated it, these measures seem designed to prioritize genuine gamers over scalpers, ensuring that those who pre-order a Switch 2 are interested in using it themselves rather than reselling it online. Scalping has been a significant issue with high-demand products like the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and the Pokémon Trading Card Game, leading to shortages and inflated prices.
Valve's successful implementation of a similar queue system for the Steam Deck, which included checks on account age and activity, may have inspired Nintendo's approach. By tying purchases to active Nintendo Accounts and requiring a history of engagement with the platform, Nintendo aims to create a more equitable distribution process.
While the My Nintendo Store's pre-order system is one way to secure a Switch 2, there will likely be other avenues available. However, this method offers hope to long-time Switch 1 owners, helping them navigate the potential frenzy of securing a launch-day pre-order.
