Nintendo Switch 2 Tariff Delays Pre-Orders in Canada

by Scarlett May 15,2025

Gamers across the globe let out a collective groan last week when the eagerly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 preorder date shifted from April 9 to an uncertain "who knows when?" This change was triggered by import tariffs introduced by President Trump, which caused financial markets to spiral. The ripple effect has crossed borders, with Nintendo Canada confirming that pre-orders in their region are also facing delays. So, if you were planning to secure a pre-order through a relative in Winnipeg, you'll need to put those plans on hold.

"Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders in Canada will not commence on April 9, 2025, in order to synchronize with the yet-to-be-determined pre-order schedule in the U.S.," stated Nintendo of Canada in a communication to the Canadian tech outlet MobileSyrup.

"Nintendo will release updated information in due course. The launch date of June 5, 2025 remains unchanged."

Pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will not begin on April 9, 2025, as we need to evaluate the potential effects of tariffs and the shifting market conditions. Nintendo will announce updated timings later. The launch date remains June 5, 2025.

While the original pre-order date was set for tomorrow, there's still no clear indication of when fans can start their relentless browser refreshing and credit card preparations, leaving gamers in a state of uncertainty and worried about potential price hikes from the initially announced price of $449.99.

In other regions, Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders have already started in the UK, with smaller retailers like EE, GAME, and Smyths quickly selling out. Scalpers have taken to eBay, selling their pre-orders for £500 ($639) or more, significantly above the retail price of £395.99 ($506).
