Nintendo Switch Celebrates Game Boy Legacy with 10 Re-Released Favorites
A curated selection of retro Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles available on the Nintendo Switch eShop. While the Nintendo Switch Online app boasts a robust Game Boy Advance library, this list focuses on titles independently released on the eShop. We've chosen ten favorites – four Game Boy Advance and six Nintendo DS games – presented without ranking.
Game Boy Advance
Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)
Kicking things off with the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the Genesis/Mega Drive original holds a slight edge in my opinion, this GBA version provides a solid alternative. A worthwhile play, especially for comparison, offering a streamlined experience. Steel Empire is enjoyable regardless of the platform, even for those who typically avoid shooters.
Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)
As the Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, the Mega Man Zero series emerged on the Game Boy Advance. This side-scrolling action game, the first in an excellent series, may have some initial rough edges, but these are polished in later installments. Begin your journey here and continue the adventure as desired.
Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)
A second Mega Man entry, justified by its distinct gameplay from Mega Man Zero. This RPG features a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The concept of a virtual world within electronic devices is cleverly executed. While later entries saw diminishing returns, this remains a highly enjoyable experience.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)
The Castlevania Advance Collection offers multiple worthwhile games, but Aria of Sorrow stands out. For me, it's even preferable to the acclaimed Symphony of the Night on occasion. The soul collecting system encourages replayability, and the gameplay is exceptionally fun. A unique setting and hidden secrets complete this excellent package – a top-tier Game Boy Advance title.
Nintendo DS
Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)
Originally a cult classic with limited distribution, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge gained wider recognition on DSiWare. This launchpad for Shantae's continued success sits on the boundary, as it was developed from an unreleased Game Boy Advance title. Interestingly, that original game is slated for release soon and could potentially merit inclusion on this list.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)
Arguably a Game Boy Advance game due to its origins, though initially unlocalized. Ace Attorney blends investigation and courtroom drama with humorous and engaging storytelling. The first game is exceptional, though later installments also hold merit.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)
From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick boasts equally strong writing and unique gameplay. As a ghost, you use your abilities to save others while uncovering the mystery of your own death. A captivating and highly recommended experience.
The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)
A top-tier Nintendo DS title, best experienced on its original hardware. While ports haven't perfectly replicated the original experience, the Switch version is a viable alternative for those without a DS. An exceptional game across the board.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)
The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection includes all Nintendo DS Castlevania games. Dawn of Sorrow stands out due to improved button controls replacing the original's touch controls. However, all three games in the collection are highly recommended.
Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)
A franchise that thrives on the DS/3DS ecosystem, but Atlus's Switch port provides a playable experience. Each Etrian Odyssey game is a substantial RPG, with Etrian Odyssey III being the largest and most rewarding.
