"Red Dead Redemption 2 Rumored for Nintendo Switch 2 by 2025 with Next-Gen Upgrade"

by Blake May 19,2025

Rumors are swirling that a Nintendo Switch 2 version of Red Dead Redemption 2 could hit the shelves by the end of 2025. Additionally, there are whispers of a next-gen upgrade for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S consoles. According to GameReactor, sources "close to Rockstar" have hinted at the development of a Switch 2 port for Rockstar's acclaimed Wild West epic, alongside a "next-gen upgrade patch" that will enhance the game on current-gen systems as well. Although details remain scarce, it's suggested that both the port and the upgrade could be released as early as this year.

These rumors are supported by similar reports from Nintenduo, which indicate that the Switch 2 version of Red Dead Redemption 2 might see a release within Take-Two's current financial year, ending March 31, 2026. Whether it will be available digitally only or also as a physical edition is still up in the air.

When Red Dead Redemption 2 launched in 2018, it was hailed as a "masterpiece" by IGN, receiving a perfect 10/10 score. IGN's Red Dead Redemption 2 review praised the game as "a meticulously polished open-world ode to the outlaw era."

The potential arrival of Red Dead Redemption 2 on the Switch 2 might not be shocking, given the recent comments from Take-Two's CEO, Strauss Zelnick. In a Q&A session with investors following Take-Two's latest financial results, Zelnick expressed "great optimism" for the Nintendo Switch 2. He highlighted Nintendo's improved support for third-party publishers and mentioned that Take-Two plans to launch four titles on the new platform. "We're launching four titles with Nintendo Switch 2, and that's I think a bigger array of releases than we've ever offered before with a new Nintendo platform," he stated. Zelnick also noted that while historically challenging, the relationship with Nintendo has improved, and Take-Two is keen to capitalize on this opportunity. "In terms of what we would bring to any platform, we address it on a case-by-case basis, we obviously want to be where the consumers are. But we would not necessarily bring every title to every platform. There are also great catalog opportunities as well."

Specifically, Take-Two is set to bring Civilization 7 on the launch day of June 5, followed by titles from the NBA 2K and WWE 2K series, and Borderlands 4 on September 12. These choices aren't surprising given that Take-Two already publishes these franchises on the current Nintendo Switch. However, Zelnick's comments suggest that there might be room for more titles from Take-Two's extensive catalog in the future. While GTA 6 might not make the cut, classics like GTA V or Red Dead Redemption 2 could potentially find their way onto the Switch 2.
