Ryan Reynolds Pitches R-Rated Star Wars to Disney

Ryan Reynolds, known for his role as Deadpool, recently shared on The Box Office Podcast that he pitched an R-rated project to Disney for the Star Wars franchise. While it remains uncertain whether Disney has accepted his pitch or if it will be a movie or TV show, Reynolds elaborated on his vision for the project.

“I pitched to Disney, I said, ‘Why don’t we do an R-rated Star Wars property?’” Reynolds explained. “It doesn’t have to be like, an overt, A+ characters... there’s a wide range of characters you could use. I don’t mean R-rated to be vulgar. R-rated is a Trojan Horse for emotion, and I always wonder why studios don’t want to just gamble on something like that.”

Reynolds has a proven track record with R-rated films, having been a key part of some of the highest-grossing R-rated movies, including Deadpool, Deadpool 2, and Deadpool & Wolverine. The latter, a collaboration with Hugh Jackman, remains the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, earning over $1.3 billion (via Box Office Mojo).

Despite his enthusiasm for an R-rated Star Wars project, Reynolds clarified that he would not want to star in it. “I’m not saying I would want to be in it; that would be a bad fit,” he stated. Instead, he expressed interest in contributing behind the scenes, possibly as a producer or writer. He believes that such intellectual properties thrive on scarcity and surprise, elements he feels could still be achieved within the Star Wars universe despite its extensive presence on Disney+.

While Reynolds continues his work with Marvel, including pushing for a Deadpool and X-Men movie, an R-rated Star Wars project seems to be a distant possibility. For those interested in the future of the Star Wars franchise, Star Wars: Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy—a frequent collaborator of Reynolds—and starring Ryan Gosling, is another project to keep an eye on.
