The Samsung 990 Evo Plus is an excellent choice for both gaming PCs and PlayStation 5 consoles. It exceeds Sony's minimum speed recommendation for the PS5, with impressive sequential read speeds of up to 7,250MB/s and write speeds of up to 6,300MB/s. While it's not as fast as the 990 Pro, it offers a compelling alternative at a lower price. The main difference between the 990 Evo Plus and the 990 Pro is that the Evo Plus is a DRAM-less drive. However, this doesn't impact PS5 performance, and for gaming PCs, it uses HMB (host memory buffer) to compensate for the lack of DRAM by borrowing a negligible amount of system RAM. Gamers will not notice any performance difference between the two.

The Samsung 990 Evo Plus does not come with a pre-installed heatsink. However, its newer single-sided SSD design is power-efficient and generates less heat than previous SSDs. This means it should work well in a PS5 without thermal throttling, even without a heatsink. For added peace of mind, you can install a heatsink, but it's not necessary and would cost an extra $7.
