Smash Bros. Dating App Receives Legal Notice

by Evelyn May 27,2025

Smash Together, an innovative dating app designed for fans of Super Smash Bros., was set to launch its open beta on May 15 after months of anticipation. However, just two days before the launch, the developers announced they had received a cease-and-desist letter, halting their plans. The news was shared via a tweet from the official SmashTogether account on May 14, featuring a disheartened Yoshi meme and the caption, "We got cease and desisted."

Although the developers did not explicitly name the sender of the cease-and-desist, many suspect it to be Nintendo, given the app's focus on the Super Smash Bros. franchise. SmashTogether marketed itself as the "premium dating site for Super Smash Bros. enjoyers of all kinds," promising to help users find their "dream Doubles partner" both in the game and in real life through a specialized matchmaking algorithm.

The app's interface included unique features tailored to the Smash Bros. community, such as sections for users to list their preferred character, or "main," and highlight their notable achievements in the game. It also featured prompts with a Smash Bros. twist, such as "I'm looking for... Someone who can make it out of pools at a major."

The cease-and-desist likely stems from concerns over intellectual property and copyright infringement. Additionally, the concept of a dating app centered around a game like Super Smash Bros. might have been a contributing factor to the legal action. As of now, there has been no further communication from the SmashTogether team regarding potential alternative solutions that might bypass the use of the Super Smash Bros. brand. Fans and followers of the app will have to wait and see what the future holds for this unique venture.
