To Give or Not to Give: The Splinter of Eothas Dilemma in Avowed

by Audrey May 13,2025

In Avowed, deciding whether to give Sargamis the Splinter of Eothas is a pivotal choice that can lead to significantly different outcomes. Here's a detailed look at what happens based on your decision.

What Happens If You Don’t Give the Splinter of Eothas to Sargamis in Avowed?

When you refuse to hand over the Splinter of Eothas to Sargamis, he becomes aggressive and initiates combat. Avowed presents him as an optional boss with a significant health bar, making this one of the more challenging early encounters.

During the fight, Sargamis summons two spirit creatures that primarily target Kai, allowing you to focus on him. He uses swift thrusting attacks with his sword, covering large distances quickly. However, he is susceptible to ice spells, which can be used to slow him down and gain an advantage.

Defeating Sargamis rewards you with the Last Light of Day mace, a unique weapon that restores 3% of your health upon defeating an enemy and adds a 10% bonus to fire damage on your attacks.

What Happens If You Give the Splinter of Eothas to Sargamis in Avowed?

If you choose to give the Splinter to Sargamis, you have a few options:

  1. Persuade Sargamis to Enter the Statue: You can convince him to sacrifice himself by entering the statue. This results in his death and you gaining the Last Light of Day mace.

  2. Offer Yourself to the Statue: You can choose to stand in the circle as instructed by Sargamis. Doing so leads to your character's death, but you earn the "Get In The Statue, Envoy" achievement. Upon reloading the game, you'll restart from the point just before entering the circle.

  3. Change Your Mind: If you decide against handing over the Splinter after initially agreeing, Sargamis will attack you, leading to a battle similar to the one described earlier.

How To Finish Dawntreader Without Killing Sargamis in Avowed

For a non-violent resolution, you can convince Sargamis that his plan won't succeed. This requires an Intellect stat of at least 4. If necessary, use our Avowed respec guide to adjust your attribute points.

To proceed with this approach, place the Splinter in the statue before speaking with Sargamis, activate the machine, and then discuss the failed attempt with him. Persuade him that his plan will fail, leading him to abandon it.

Choosing the Court Augur or Arcane Scholar background can facilitate this path, though other backgrounds might offer similar options. Avoid selecting the intellect option about live soul transfer during the conversation.

After Sargamis leaves, you can decide whether to let the voice use the statue or destroy it yourself. Then, find Sargamis in his quarters to conclude this segment of the Dawntreader quest. This route not only avoids combat but also grants more experience than fighting or handing over the Splinter.

Avowed is now available on PC and Xbox, and for those new to the game, our beginner's guide offers valuable tips to get started.
