"Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster: A 5-Year Journey to Faithfulness"
The development of Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster spanned five years, a testament to the developers' dedication to creating a faithful remaster of the beloved classics. Dive in to discover the meticulous process behind the game's production and what lies ahead for the Suikoden franchise.
Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster's Development Time Was Longer Than Expected
Developers Wanted To Honor The Originals
The Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster required five years of development as the team strived to produce a remaster that truly honored the original games. In an insightful interview with Dengeki Online on March 4, 2025, the developers of Suikoden I & II HD Remaster (Suikoden 1 and 2 HDR) detailed their journey to create a high-quality remaster.
Originally announced in 2022 with a planned release in 2023, the project faced delays and is now set to launch this year. Game Director Takahiro Sakiyama shared that the decision to postpone was made after extensive debugging revealed areas needing further refinement.
Tatsuya Ogushi, another Game Director for Suikoden 1 and 2 HDR, explained their approach: "We began by assessing the situation. After consultations with Sakiyama about quality standards, it was evident that several aspects required significant attention and thorough improvement."
Reviving the Series
The remaster isn't merely a standalone project but a pivotal first step in revitalizing the Suikoden franchise. Producer Rui Naito expressed their vision for the series' future, emphasizing the importance of a solid foundation.
Naito communicated this vision to the team: "This remaster is the initial move in reviving the Suikoden IP, and we must ensure it's done right. The core directive was to 'make it solid.' If we released a substandard product at this stage, it could jeopardize the entire revival effort."
Gensou Suikoden Live Revealed New Anime, Mobile Game, and More
At the recent Gensou Suikoden Live event on March 4, 2025, Konami unveiled several new projects aimed at rejuvenating the Suikoden franchise. Naito described this event as the second step in their revival plan, although he remained uncertain about the total number of steps needed.
He elaborated on their ongoing efforts: "We're refining Suikoden I & II HDR while also focusing on the upcoming mobile game, Suikoden STAR LEAP, and the Suikoden II anime. Once these are successfully launched, we can then consider our next moves."
Konami also announced "Suikoden: The Anime," an adaptation of Suikoden 2's storyline, marking the debut project for Konami Animation. Additionally, a new mobile game, "Genso Suikoden: STAR LEAP," was revealed, with both projects showcasing teaser trailers. Release dates for these initiatives are yet to be announced.
Konami's commitment to the Suikoden franchise extends beyond these announcements, with more projects and events planned to bring this cherished series back into the spotlight.
Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune & Dunan Unification Wars is slated for release on March 6, 2025, across multiple platforms including PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
