Sydney Sweeney's New Movie on the Ropes as Christy Takes Just $1.3M From Over 2,000 Theaters at the Box Office

Sydney Sweeney’s latest film, Christy, endured a disappointing box office debut with only $1.3 million earned from North American cinemas.

The biographical drama features the Madame Web actress as boxer Christy Martin in what many view as an Oscar-worthy performance. However, critical response has been divided; IGN awarded Christy 7/10, noting: “Sydney Sweeney blazes trails and pulls no punches in a choppy biopic that falters at the finish.”

Despite the buzz, the R-rated film struggled immediately, grossing $1.305 million across 2,101 domestic theaters. This results in a per-theater average of just $649, marking one of the weakest openings for any movie released in over 2,000 locations.

The domestic launch outperformed Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s biopic The Smashing Machine, which debuted with $5.84 million and was deemed a commercial failure. That film ultimately earned only $11.38 million domestically, a figure Christy may struggle to reach.

Last week, Sweeney addressed the controversy surrounding her American Eagle jeans campaign earlier this year. Speaking to GQ, she explained that she declined to release a statement because “I’ve always believed that I’m not here to tell people what to think.” The advertisement played on the phrase “great genes,” featuring the slogan: “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans.”

Sweeney has several upcoming projects in her schedule, including Season 3 of Euphoria, psychological thriller The Housemaid, and The Devil Wears Prada 2. Reports also indicate she will star in a live-action Gundam film, an adaptation of Split Fiction, and a movie based on a popular horror story from Reddit.

Predator: Badlands led the domestic box office this weekend. Sarah’s Oil, starring Zachary Levi, Naya Desir-Johnson, and Sonequa Martin-Green, earned $4.459 million domestically. Nuremberg brought in $4.1 million, while Die My Love opened with $2.8 million. Christy did not make the top 10 list.
