Victrix Pro BFG Tekken 8 Rage Art Edition Controller Review – Customizable, Comfortable, but Lacking in Ways
This extensive review covers a month's experience with the Victrix Pro BFG Tekken 8 Rage Art Edition controller across PC, PS5, PS4, and Steam Deck. The reviewer, a seasoned TouchArcade contributor, explores its modularity and performance against other "Pro" controllers.
Unboxing and Contents: The controller arrives in a high-quality protective case, including the controller itself, a braided cable, a six-button fightpad module, two gates, extra analog stick and d-pad caps, a screwdriver, and a wireless USB dongle. The included items are Tekken 8 themed.
Compatibility: Seamlessly works with PS5, PS4, and PC (including Steam Deck via dongle). Wireless functionality requires the dongle and selection of the appropriate console mode.
Features and Customization: The modular design allows for interchangeable components: symmetric/asymmetric stick layouts, fightpad, adjustable triggers, thumbsticks, and d-pads. This adaptability suits various game genres. Four paddle-like buttons offer extra control. However, the lack of rumble, haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and gyro support is a significant drawback, especially considering the price point and the rumble capabilities of cheaper controllers.
Design and Feel: The vibrant Tekken 8 themed design is visually appealing. While comfortable, the controller feels lightweight. The grip is excellent, enabling extended play sessions.
PS5 Performance: Functions well on PS5, supporting the touchpad and standard buttons. However, it lacks the PS5's haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, gyro, and the ability to power on the console.
Steam Deck Performance: Works flawlessly on Steam Deck, correctly identified as a PS5 controller, with full share button and touchpad functionality.
Battery Life: Significantly longer battery life than the DualSense and DualSense Edge. A low-battery indicator is conveniently located on the touchpad.
Software: Software is only available on the Microsoft Store (untested by the reviewer).
Negatives: The absence of rumble, low polling rate, lack of included Hall Effect sensors (requiring separate purchase), and the need for a wireless dongle are significant drawbacks. The lack of rumble seems to be a Sony imposed limitation on third-party controllers. The incompatibility with iOS devices is also noted.
Overall: A highly customizable and comfortable controller, but several shortcomings hinder its potential. The lack of rumble, the dongle requirement, extra cost for Hall Effect sticks, and the low polling rate are major issues given the high price. Despite extensive use and positive aspects, these drawbacks prevent it from achieving a perfect score.
