Persona 4 Remake Loses Original Voice Actor

The long-rumored Persona 4 remake appears increasingly likely, as an original voice actor from the cast has confirmed they were not invited back for the unannounced title.

Yuri Lowenthal, the voice behind Yosuke Hanamura in Persona 4 and various spin-offs, stated earlier today on BlueSky that he will not reprise his role as Yosuke for "the Persona 4 remake."

"And for everyone asking — no, I won't be returning as Yosuke in the Persona 4 remake," Lowenthal shared. "I asked, and maybe even begged, but they've decided not to bring me back."

The "they" in question is likely developer Atlus, though the company has not officially confirmed the remake’s development. We have contacted Sega/Atlus for a statement.

SAG-AFTRA video game performers remain on strike, partly due to disagreements over AI protections. While Lowenthal is a SAG-AFTRA member, it’s unclear whether the strike influenced the casting decision. The union continues to advocate for actor safeguards, noting in a March announcement that they remain "frustratingly far apart" from industry negotiators.

Even without official confirmation, rumors of a Persona 4 remake have circulated for some time. Earlier this year, a domain name discovery fueled speculation that a remake is underway, following earlier teases from leakers.

That said, a former voice actor confirming the project was certainly an unexpected way for the news to break. Following the success of Persona 3 Reload, a Persona 4 remake seems like a logical next step.

As for timing — Persona 3 Reload was revealed during the summer 2023 Xbox Game Showcase. It’s reasonable to expect another possible announcement during this summer’s wave of game news and trailers.
