Nintendo Keeps Door Open for Wind Waker HD Switch 2 Port

During the April 2 Nintendo Direct, the company announced Wind Waker's GameCube version would be coming to Switch 2. This led many fans to question whether Wind Waker HD might still make its way to the new console.

Nintendo of America's Senior VP of Product Development Nate Bihldorff clarified the situation during an April 9 interview on Kinda Funny Games Daily. Host Tim Gettys discussed his conversation with Bihldorff at a Switch 2 press event in New York, where they addressed the potential for a Wind Waker HD Switch 2 port.

Gettys reported: "When I asked if having The Wind Waker on NSO means the Wii U port won't come to Switch 2, he immediately said 'No, all possibilities remain open.' While nothing is confirmed, the option clearly isn't off the table."

From GameCube Debut to Wii U Remaster

Wind Waker HD Enhanced Visuals Comparison

The original Wind Waker launched in 2002 for GameCube (2003 internationally), with the enhanced Wii U version releasing in 2013. Wind Waker HD introduced notable improvements including refined HD graphics, enhanced lighting effects, gyroscopic weapon controls, faster sailing mechanics, and various gameplay refinements. Since GameCube titles will be exclusive to Switch 2, a Wind Waker HD port could be the sole way for original Switch owners to experience the game.

Nintendo recently rebranded its classic game libraries as Nintendo Classics, announcing that "Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members will soon access The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-ZERO GX, and SOULCALIBUR II on Switch 2, with more titles to follow." The service will offer additional features like retro screen filters and widescreen display options for select games.
