Boss of Baldur's Gate 3 Dev Larian Says Single-Player Games Aren't Dead: 'They Just Have to Be Good'

The cyclical debate about the demise of big single-player games is back. This time, Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke, fresh off the monumental success of Baldur's Gate 3, has offered a succinct rebuttal. In a post on X/Twitter, Vincke dismissed the recurring claim, stating, "It's that time of the year again when big single-player games are declared dead. Use your imagination. They're not. They just have to be good."

Vincke's perspective carries significant weight. Larian Studios, through consistent delivery of high-quality CRPGs like Divinity: Original Sin and Divinity: Original Sin 2, earned its reputation before tackling Baldur's Gate 3 and achieving widespread acclaim.

Known for his insightful pronouncements, whether at events like The Game Awards or in other interviews, Vincke consistently emphasizes the importance of developer passion, respect for both players and developers, and a genuine care for the games themselves. This latest statement, while unsurprising given his past comments, serves as a reassuring affirmation.

2025 has already witnessed a significant single-player success with Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 from Warhorse Studios. With several months remaining in the year, ample opportunity exists for other single-player titles to capture the spotlight.

Larian Studios has shifted focus away from Baldur's Gate 3 and Dungeons & Dragons to develop a new IP. However, during this year's Game Developers Conference, Dan Ayoub, SVP of digital games at Hasbro, hinted that updates regarding the future of the Baldur's Gate series may be forthcoming.
