Atari's Breakout Beyond Reimagines Classic Brick-Breaker with Sideways Twist

by Owen Jul 23,2025

Atari's 1976 classic Breakout gets a bold refresh nearly five decades later. Breakout Beyond reimagines the iconic brick-breaker, keeping the paddle-and-ball core but shifting the action to a dynamic sideways flow.

Crafted by Choice Provisions, known for the BIT.TRIP series, Breakout Beyond introduces a left-to-right progression. Players shatter bricks to rack up combos, with vibrant lights and effects amplifying the intensity as scores climb.

Unique bricks trigger spectacular effects, from explosive bursts to a powerful laser cannon. The game features 72 levels, an unlockable endless mode with a global online leaderboard, and local two-player co-op for shared brick-breaking fun.

Initially planned as an exclusive for the Intellivision Amico in 2020, Breakout Beyond was acquired by Atari for completion after the console faced delays.

"We're excited to deliver this gem to our community," said Ethan Stearns, Atari's senior director of games publishing. "The team saw it as a brilliant evolution, preserving Breakout's essence while introducing a fresh spin. Breakout Beyond is a stellar addition to the franchise, and we’re eager to see players unleash wild combos."

The Amico, unveiled in 2018 with a planned 2020 launch, has yet to release, facing multiple setbacks and delays. Atari acquired Intellivision’s branding and rights last year, excluding the Amico console.

Breakout Beyond arrives later this year on PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and the Atari VCS.
