"Creature Commandos: Key References & Cameos"

First Season of Creature Commandos Completes DCU Kickoff Under James Gunn

Season 1 Cliffhangers in Gunn's New DC Universe

James Gunn's Creature Commandos has wrapped its debut season, marking the official launch of the rebooted DC Cinematic Universe. Across seven action-packed episodes, the animated series plants numerous Easter eggs and teasers connecting to both classic DC lore and upcoming projects.

Peacekeeper and Suicide Squad Remain Canon

Peacekeeper and Suicide Squad continuity confirmed

James Gunn has maintained continuity from his previous DC works. John Cena's Peacemaker series remains part of the timeline (minus Zack Snyder's Justice League cameo), with ARGUS agent John Economos referencing its events. The Suicide Squad also gets direct confirmation as official canon within this new universe.

Iconic DC Locations Established

Gotham City in DC Universe

The series plants multiple geographical markers across the DC landscape: From Wonder Woman's Themyscira to Batman's Gotham and Superman's Metropolis (complete with Galaxy Broadcasting System references). We also visit Nightwing's Blüdhaven, Green Arrow's Star City, and the villainous nation of Bialia - home to Blue Beetle's scarab tech.

Military Legends and Mad Scientists

Sgt. Rock appearance

Episode 3 reveals G.I. Robot's WWII service alongside Sgt. Rock and Easy Company - DC's beloved non-superpowered soldiers. Maury Sterling voices Rock, potentially paving the way for Daniel Craig's rumored live-action casting. We also meet Dr. Will Magnus (creator of the Metal Men) studying G.I. Robot's technology.

Deep Cut DC Villains Abound

Obscure DC villains cameo

ARGUS prison houses wonderfully obscure DC rogues like Animal-Plant-Mineral Man (Doom Patrol fans will recognize) and 1970s Wonder Woman foe Bloody Millipede. Sharp-eyed viewers can spot Congorilla, Egg-Fu, and other D-list baddies in the cafeteria scenes - some placed intentionally by animators rather than Gunn himself.

Justice League and Beyond

Justice League cameos

Episode 4 delivers a massive hero showcase via Cersei's apocalyptic visions. Beyond confirmed appearances (Wonder Woman, Robin/Damien Wayne, Peacemaker), we spot Superman with Guy Gardner's Green Lantern, Mr. Terrific, and more. Notably, Gorilla Grodd appears as Flash's nemesis, while Gunn hints at continuing Blue Beetle's story post-movie.

Batman Villains Make Their Mark

Clayface revealed

Batman lore gets significant play - from Clayface impersonating Gotham Academy's Dr. McPherson (voiced by Alan Tudyk, who also plays Dr. Phosphorus) to criminal kingpin Rupert Thorne's involvement in Dr. Phosphorus' origin. Most excitingly, we get our first proper look at the new DCU's Batman apprehending Phosphorus.

Expanded Team for Season 2

New Creature Commandos lineup

The season finale reveals Bride's new team lineup: King Shark (Diedrich Bader voicing the same character from The Suicide Squad), reformed villains Dr. Phosphorus and Weasel, upgraded G.I. Robot, plus comics-inspired additions Nosferata and Kahili. With Season 2 on the horizon and Superman coming in 2025, Gunn's DC Universe is just getting started.
