“Among men, Lu Bu. Among horses, Red Hare.” “Do not pursue Lu Bu.” These phrases, which are peppered throughout Dynasty Warriors: Origins, send a very clear message – don’t fight Lu Bu. But… what if you want to? Well, here’s how.

Deciding to take on Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins is a daunting challenge. From my experience, it took over an hour to conquer this legendary figure. However, there are compelling reasons to face him. Firstly, defeating Lu Bu grants you bragging rights, a true badge of honor among players. Secondly, depending on your faction choice—Shu or Wei—you may encounter him as a mandatory boss during the Battle of Xiapi in Chapter 4. Lastly, triumphing over him at the Battle of Hulao Gate not only earns you the "The Strongest" trophy but also unlocks the game's ultimate weapon, the halberd, post-game, making the fight highly rewarding.

Lu Bu’s First Phase

Before engaging Lu Bu, equip yourself with gear that can withstand his onslaught. A sword that can land multiple hits and cause staggering is essential, along with Battle Arts that are quick to activate, require minimal Bravery, and have a broad range. In my battle, I used Falcon Flurry, Mad Blade Rush, Absconding Slash, and Flying Dragon Slash. Accessories like Divine Bird’s Wing and Divine Turtle’s Shell will boost your health and defense, crucial for surviving Lu Bu’s powerful attacks. Additionally, choose a weapon with a skill that replenishes Bravery with each Perfect Evade, as this will be your primary Bravery source in the fight.

In Dynasty Warriors: Origins, Lu Bu typically starts the battle mounted on Red Hare. During this phase, he charges around the area, occasionally pausing to rest. Use these moments to strike with your Battle Arts, then quickly retreat. His attacks have limited AOE, except when Red Hare performs a leap and crash. Dodging these is manageable. Once his health drops to 80%, Lu Bu dismounts, and the real challenge begins.

Lu Bu’s Second Phase

Lu Bu grabbing the Wanderer in Dynasty Warriors: OriginsOn foot, Lu Bu becomes even more formidable. His swift attacks and rapid movements across the battlefield are marked by a red aura, making him immune to staggering or interruption. He often charges in sets of three, and if he attempts a grab without his spear, it's a move to avoid as it can severely deplete your health.

His most lethal attack is signaled by an orange glow, leading to a barrage of three massive arrows launched three times, capable of juggling and decimating your health. Here, a long-range Battle Art like Absconding Slash can interrupt this devastating move. Close-range arts like Palm Strike are too risky and can lead to instant death. Keep your Musou gauge charged for emergency invincibility, which can save you from fatal mistakes.

Lu Bu is surprisingly vulnerable to juggling during this phase. Hitting him repeatedly can quickly charge your Battle Arts, helping you break his Fortitude meter faster. Stay close to react to his attacks more effectively, and remember: evasion is key.

Lu Bu’s Final Phase

When Lu Bu's health is sufficiently reduced, he enters Musou Rage, marking the final phase. He becomes unstaggered and unleashes relentless attacks. Your objective is to deplete his Fortitude before he executes his Musou attack. Use all available resources—activate your Musou attacks, employ Battle Arts, and strike with everything you've got. If he completes his Musou Attack, he'll immediately reactivate it, forcing you to restart the phase. Breaking his Fortitude here is your ticket to victory.

And that’s how to defeat Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins! Dynasty Warriors: Origins is now available for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
