Games Workshop Says Its Contract With Amazon Prevents It From Revealing Any Details on the Warhammer 40,000 Cinematic Universe — but Shares Promising-Sounding Update on Scope and Scale
Work on the Warhammer 40,000 Cinematic Universe is moving forward, according to Games Workshop’s latest financial report, though major updates are not expected anytime soon—development is projected to take several years before anything substantial emerges.
The UK-based company shared this brief update with investors as part of its annual report released this week, which also offered a promising glimpse into what lies ahead.
Henry Cavill, the former Superman actor and longtime fan of Warhammer 40,000, will star in and serve as executive producer across all Amazon Studios productions under the newly finalized deal between Games Workshop and Amazon late last year.
The vision for Cavill’s Warhammer 40,000 Cinematic Universe remains under wraps, and Games Workshop has urged fans to temper their expectations, noting that tangible progress will take time. Still, excitement is building among followers eager to see the richly detailed Warhammer 40,000 universe brought to life on screen through film and television. With Cavill at the helm, many believe the project has a strong chance of being executed with both authenticity and grandeur.
However, translating the expansive scope of the franchise into compelling films and series while maintaining a manageable budget may present a significant challenge. Warhammer 40,000 features a deeply intricate universe, home to numerous warring factions, a history spanning thousands of years, and epic galactic conflicts involving massive Space Marines battling monstrous foes. We’re talking about space wars that stretch across centuries, planet-consuming land battles, and the Warp—a dimension so alien and unpredictable it can manifest as nearly any imaginable reality.
That’s why fans have been speculating about how Amazon plans to tell the story. A more grounded narrative that doesn’t center on Space Marines might be a more realistic starting point—such as Dan Abnett’s beloved Eisenhorn series, which follows the relentless inquisitors Gregor Eisenhorn and Gideon Ravenor as they pursue heretics and demons across the galaxy.
Alternatively, if Amazon chooses to embrace the full epic scale, it could adapt the foundational The Horus Heresy saga, or focus on one of the most iconic battles in the current timeline, such as The Fall of Cadia.
Either way, bringing Warhammer 40,000 to live action is a monumental task—and that’s precisely why Games Workshop’s statement in its financial report has fans energized:
“On 10 December 2024, we announced the conclusion of our negotiations with Amazon for the adaptation of Games Workshop’s Warhammer 40,000 universe into films and television series, including associated merchandising rights. The project continues in accordance with our contractual agreement with Amazon. This agreement prohibits us from disclosing any specific details or commercial terms.
We have strong partners who are clearly committed to portraying Warhammer with authenticity and at the full scope and scale the setting demands. This is a long-term collaboration with Amazon, and there will be no major announcements in the near term—such endeavors require several years to develop and bring to market.”
It’s that mention of having “strong partners” (Amazon and Henry Cavill) who are clearly dedicated to presenting Warhammer “with authenticity and at the full scope and scale the setting demands” that has fans particularly hopeful. For many, this suggests Amazon will invest heavily in production value—especially given the massive budget behind its recent series, The Rings of Power.
As Games Workshop emphasized, there will be no visible progress for some time. So for now, fans are left to piece together clues from scattered hints—like recent comments from author Dan Abnett about NDAs and upcoming book releases.
In the meantime, Games Workshop highlighted the well-received Warhammer 40,000 episode on Amazon Prime’s animated series Secret Level, describing it as “a preview of the Warhammer IP in digital form on the small screen.”
In June, Cavill himself addressed the "complexity" and "challenges" involved in adapting the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Yet he emphasized that he’s relishing the task. For fans, that’s encouraging news. “Bringing Warhammer to life is a dream come true,” he said. “It’s different from anything I’ve done before—this is the first time I’ve had full creative control. It’s thrilling. The IP is incredibly complex and nuanced, and that’s exactly what I love about it. The challenge of doing justice to its depth and intricacy is one I’m enjoying immensely.”
When the Games Workshop / Amazon deal was first announced, Cavill posted on Instagram that he had been “working away in concept rooms, breaking down approaches to the enormity and magnificence of the Warhammer world.”
