"Nintendo Switch 2 VRR Limited to Handheld Mode"

by Benjamin May 19,2025

Back in early April, fans of the Nintendo Switch 2 were buzzing about the mention of variable refresh rate (VRR) on the system's informational pages, which mysteriously vanished shortly after. Now, Nintendo has stepped forward to clarify the situation surrounding VRR functionality on the Nintendo Switch 2.

In a statement provided to NintendoLife, Nintendo confirmed that the initial information about VRR was inaccurate: "Nintendo Switch 2 supports VRR in handheld mode only. The incorrect information was initially published on the Nintendo Switch 2 website, and we apologize for the error."

When questioned about future firmware updates potentially bringing VRR to docked mode, Nintendo responded with, "We have nothing to announce on this topic." This means that, for now, users playing on a TV won't benefit from VRR, a feature that's only available in handheld mode.

This clarification comes after weeks of confusion, as the VRR mention was first spotted and then quickly removed. Digital Foundry contributor Oliver Mackenzie documented how references to VRR gradually disappeared from various sites.

Although this news might be disappointing for those eager to see VRR in the Switch 2's TV settings at launch, it's worth noting that hope isn't entirely lost. Sony, for instance, rolled out VRR support to PS5 consoles after their initial release, suggesting that Nintendo might follow suit with a future update.

In other developments related to the Switch 2, Nintendo has released a list of games that will receive free performance upgrades, including titles like Pokémon Scarlet & Violet and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. Additionally, Nintendo of America's president, Doug Bowser, has assured that the company will have sufficient Switch 2 units to meet demand "through the holidays."
