Fans Hail Bethesda's Remaster Price, Urge Nintendo to Follow
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered has become a focal point in the ongoing discussion about Nintendo's pricing strategy for the Switch 2 and its game library. Some fans argue that Nintendo, the company behind Mario, could take a lesson from Bethesda on setting fair video game prices.
Developed by the remake specialists at Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, Oblivion Remastered boasts a substantial list of visual and gameplay enhancements. It runs at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second, as expected, but other improvements are even more significant. Nearly every aspect has been refined, from the leveling systems and character creator to combat animations and in-game menus. The package also features extensive new dialogue, a fully realized third-person view, and advanced lip-sync technology. These substantial changes have been well-received by the community, with some players arguing the project feels more like a full remake. However, Bethesda has clarified its decision to classify it as a remaster.
The base edition of Oblivion Remastered is priced at $50 and includes all originally released downloadable content. This represents a high-value, impressive package that, for many, highlights the perceived shortcomings of Nintendo's Switch 2 game pricing.
Many are drawing comparisons between the $50 Oblivion Remastered and titles like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, which costs $70, or The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - Nintendo Switch 2, which carries a steep $80 price tag. While there is a $10 upgrade path for original Switch owners and a free upgrade for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, Nintendo's standard pricing has ignited a backlash online. This is especially true considering the jump to $80 applies not only to Tears of the Kingdom but to several other Switch 2 titles.
The situation appears even less favorable for Zelda. IGN has confirmed that the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of Breath of the Wild does not include the Expansion Pass. This means players who don't already own it must pay an additional $20 to access the DLC on the new console.
The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of Breath of the Wild offers enhanced visuals and performance, a new achievements system, and support for the "Zelda Notes" service within the Nintendo Switch Online app. However, existing owners of the Switch version do not receive these features automatically; they must purchase the upgrade to the Switch 2 Edition to gain access.
For players who do not own the game, the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of Breath of the Wild is available for $70—$10 more than its original launch price. Crucially, this still does not include the DLC Expansion Pack. To get the complete experience, it's another $20, bringing the total to $90 for the full Breath of the Wild package on the Switch 2.
Paying a whopping $90 for the most up-to-date version of a game that originally launched in 2017 on the Wii U is a tough pill to swallow. This is particularly evident when considering other pricing, such as Mario Kart World retailing at an unprecedented $80 and the Nintendo Switch 2 console itself costing $450.
This is where Oblivion Remastered stands out—a project some consider robust enough to be labeled a remake, and it includes all its DLC for a single $50 price. It's easy to see why these comparisons are casting Nintendo's strategy in a negative light.

"Nintendo will look at them and say ‘those guys could have made $30 extra,' " joked redditor Cultural_Writing2999. "It's hard for them to learn much of anything over the sound of all that money being printed," geldonyetich added.

This sentiment reflects a broader perception that Nintendo is setting these prices simply because it knows its audience will pay. As Dr. Serkan Toto, CEO of Kantan Games, explained to IGN: “Nintendo is charging this price because they feel they can and that people will pay."
