Play Games in Portrait Mode with New Tate Mode Mini Controller!
If you're a gamer, you're likely familiar with the frustration of playing vertical arcade games on your phone. It's an issue that has plagued mobile gamers for years. However, a modder named Max Kern has come up with an innovative solution: the Tate Mode mini controller. But does it really address the problem effectively?
Traditional controllers are designed for landscape mode, similar to those used on the Nintendo Switch or Steam Deck. Yet, classic vertical shooters and retro games often require you to hold your phone in portrait mode, akin to scrolling through Instagram.
Max Kern's creative solution is a compact USB-C gamepad tailored specifically for portrait-mode gaming, also known as Tate mode. This controller connects directly to your phone's USB-C port, eliminating the need for Bluetooth, charging, or additional batteries.
The Tate Mode mini controller was crafted using a Raspberry Pi RP2040 chip, with the case and buttons 3D-printed through JLCPCB. If you're interested in building your own, Max has provided a detailed tutorial on his YouTube channel.

The controller utilizes the GP2040-CE firmware and functions as a standard HID controller, making it compatible with Android, iOS, Windows, and Mac. This versatility is impressive for such a compact device.
However, there are some concerns. The setup may strain the USB-C port, as the gamepad supports part of the phone's weight. This means you'll need to hold both the phone and the controller carefully to avoid damaging the connector over time.
On Reddit, opinions are mixed. Some users admire the innovation but worry about potential hand cramps and discomfort, while others are more accepting of this unique DIY project. It's worth noting that this isn't a commercial product but rather a DIY endeavor. Max has generously shared all the necessary firmware and print files on Thingiverse and Github.
