Respawn Cancels Multiplayer FPS Project Quietly

by Claire May 15,2025

Apex Legends developer Respawn has recently canceled an unannounced incubation project, leading to the layoff of an undisclosed number of team members involved. The news initially surfaced through a now-deleted LinkedIn post by a former production coordinator, who shared that they were part of the project for the past year and are now seeking new opportunities.

IGN has independently verified the cancellation of this unannounced multiplayer FPS project. This project was developed by a team that previously worked on a now-canceled Star Wars FPS at Respawn. While the exact number of layoffs remains unspecified, sources have described it as "small." Additionally, at least one individual associated with the project has stated on LinkedIn that their departure was voluntary.

This development is part of a broader trend of project cancellations, layoffs, and restructuring at Electronic Arts (EA), which began in 2023. That year saw the elimination of 50 positions at BioWare and an unspecified number at Codemasters. The trend continued almost a year later with EA laying off 670 employees across the company and canceling multiple projects, including the Star Wars FPS, which resulted in around two dozen job losses at Respawn. Since then, BioWare has undergone restructuring, with developers being reassigned to other internal projects and additional key staff members being laid off.

IGN has sought a comment from Electronic Arts regarding these developments.
