"Space Marine 2 Devs' April Fool's Joke Sparks Fan Excitement"

by Skylar Jun 14,2025

April 1st has passed, and with it the annual wave of April Fool’s Day pranks from the video game industry—most of which are quickly forgotten. However, one joke from the team behind Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 might just stick around a little longer in the minds of fans.

Just before midnight on April 1st, Focus Entertainment—the publisher of Space Marine 2—announced what appeared to be a new DLC drop: the introduction of the Chaplain class.

“In story mode, swap out Titus for The Chaplain and experience the game as a true Codex-compliant Ultramarine,” Focus teased, likely chuckling behind their monitors.

This fictional ‘DLC’ supposedly added the Chaplain as a playable character in story mode, along with an “Enhanced Dialogue System” where he would, every five minutes, remind allies that “the Codex Astartes does not support this action,” or warn, “I’m telling the Inquisition.”

The Chaplain even came equipped with a special ability titled Discipline. This feature allowed players to instantly report any minor deviations from the Codex Astartes, granting a 5% discipline bonus—at the cost of a -20% brotherhood penalty.

The humor hits hard if you’ve played through Space Marine 2, where Chaplain Quintus constantly eyes protagonist Titus with suspicion, despite Titus' unwavering loyalty to the Imperium and the Emperor.

Throughout the campaign, as Titus battles the Tyranids and the traitorous Thousand Sons, his mysterious power becomes more evident—and Quintus doesn’t like it one bit. He’s the overzealous hall monitor always ready to write up a report at the first sign of noncompliance. In short, everyone loves to hate the Chaplain.

He's since become a meme within the Space Marine community, and this lighthearted April Fool’s joke leaned heavily into that reputation. Interestingly, some fans have expressed genuine interest in seeing the Chaplain added to the game—not necessarily with those exact abilities, but perhaps as a serious warrior-priest who enforces strict adherence to the Emperor’s teachings.

“This would actually go hard if this was real,” wrote Reddit user ResidentDrama9739 on the Space Marine subreddit, echoing the sentiment of many enthusiastic commenters speculating how the Chaplain could fit into the gameplay loop.

Interestingly, Space Marine 2 is indeed set to receive a new class soon. While Saber Interactive and Focus Entertainment haven't revealed its identity yet, speculation is rampant. Many expect it to be the Apothecary, the closest thing the Ultramarines have to a medic. Others hope for the Librarian, bringing warp-fueled psychic powers into the mix. Does the playful inclusion of the Chaplain in an April Fools’ post rule him out as a future addition? Maybe not entirely.

There’s plenty going on in the world of Space Marine 2, especially after the surprise reveal that development on Space Marine 3 has already begun. Meanwhile, the Year One roadmap for Space Marine 2 remains active, with Patch 7 scheduled for release in mid-April. Looking ahead, the game will also introduce the upcoming new class, fresh PvE operations, and new melee weapons.
