Upgrade Weapons Guide for Atomfall

by Brooklyn Jun 23,2025

In *Atomfall*, upgrading your weapons isn't just about boosting their stats—it also rewards you with a sleek new skin and even unlocks the “Make do and mend” trophy. If you're eager to enhance your arsenal and get the most out of your gear, here's a complete guide on how to upgrade weapons in *Atomfall*.

How to Unlock the Gunsmithing Skill in Atomfall

Before you can begin crafting upgraded weapons, you'll need to unlock the Gunsmithing skill—a valuable survival ability that opens up a range of crafting recipes. To learn this skill, you must first obtain and read the Crafting Manual. While locating skill-related books in *Atomfall* can often be tricky, there’s a straightforward path to securing this one.

Head to Wyndham Village and visit Morris Wick at his Village Shop. He possesses a copy of the Crafting Manual, but acquiring it requires more than simple bartering. When you arrive at St. Katherine’s Church early in the game, you’ll witness a storyline involving the murder of Maisie and the Vicar’s attempt to conceal it. However, further investigation reveals that Morris is actually responsible for the crime. By gathering evidence against him and confronting him, you can force him into a deal.

The key piece of incriminating evidence—titled “Kill the One They Call Maisie”—can be found in the Brewery Cellar located at coordinates 30.5 E, 80.5 N in western Wyndham Village. Look for a cellar entrance near the ruined building and search inside until you locate the note. Once you have it, return to Morris at his shop (located at 33.3 E, 79.9 N) and engage him in dialogue. Choose options that subtly pressure him without direct threats until the “Bargaining” option becomes available. Selecting this will result in Morris handing over the Crafting Manual in exchange for your silence.

Alternatively, you may find the Crafting Manual in D Section of The Interchange, though this route is significantly more challenging and time-consuming compared to the Morris-based method described above.

Once you’ve obtained and read the Crafting Manual, you’ll need to invest 7 Training Stimulants to unlock the Gunsmith skill. This grants access to weapon upgrade recipes and is well worth the investment. Be sure to explore B.A.R.D. structures like Bunkers and The Interchange to collect enough stimulants.

With the Crafting Manual and Gunsmith skill under your belt, you’ll gain access to recipes for weapon upgrades. Every time you acquire a weapon, you automatically unlock the recipe to craft its next-tier version. These tiers progress from Rusty → Stock → Pristine. To perform an upgrade, you’ll need two of the current-tier variant along with specific amounts of Gun Oil and Scrap, which vary depending on the weapon.

For example, upgrading the Falkirk Battle Rifle to the Pristine tier requires 2 units of the Falkirk Battle Rifle (Stock), 3 Gun Oil, and 6 Scrap. Both Gun Oil and Scrap are commonly found at military installations such as Protocol Camps. If you plan on upgrading weapons frequently, investing in the Deep Pockets survival skill is highly recommended to increase your carrying capacity for essential crafting materials.

Once you successfully upgrade any weapon to the Pristine tier for the very first time, you’ll earn the “Make do and mend” achievement or trophy—an easy yet satisfying reward for your efforts.
