Virtua Fighter Footage Unveiled by Sega
Virtua Fighter Returns: New In-Engine Footage Unveiled
Sega has unveiled new in-engine footage of the upcoming Virtua Fighter game, marking the franchise's return after nearly two decades of dormancy. This new installment will be developed by Sega's Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the team behind the Yakuza series and the Virtua Fighter 5 remaster.
The footage, first shown at NVIDIA's 2025 CES keynote, isn't actual gameplay but a meticulously choreographed demonstration showcasing the game's visuals. The highly polished, almost cinematic quality suggests a focus on presentation, hinting at a style reminiscent of a Hong Kong action film. This carefully staged combat sequence offers a glimpse into the game's potential look and feel. With other fighting game franchises enjoying recent success, Virtua Fighter's comeback promises to further solidify the 2020s as a golden age for the genre.
Evolving Visuals: A Blend of Realism and Style
While not gameplay, the in-engine graphics provide a strong indication of the final product's visual direction. The footage showcases a departure from the franchise's traditionally stylized polygonal characters, instead opting for a more realistic aesthetic that bridges the gap between Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6. The trailer features Akira, the series' iconic protagonist, in two new outfits, noticeably different from his classic look.
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio at the Helm
The development is spearheaded by Sega's Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, also responsible for the upcoming Project Century. Their involvement, alongside previous contributions to the Virtua Fighter 5 remaster, suggests a commitment to blending the series' legacy with modern gaming standards.
Details about the new Virtua Fighter remain scarce, beyond its status as a completely new entry. However, Sega's enthusiasm, as expressed by President and COO Shuji Utsumi in the VF Direct 2024 livestream ("Virtua Fighter is finally back!"), clearly indicates a strong dedication to the franchise's revival. The company continues to offer tantalizing glimpses of the game, building anticipation for its eventual release.
