A standard domino set, often referred to as a deck or pack, typically consists of 28 tiles. These tiles are colloquially known as bones, cards, tiles, tickets, stones, or spinners. Domino sets are versatile gaming devices, akin to playing cards or dice, allowing for a variety of games. Extended sets like double 9 and double 12 are utilized for games such as Mexican Train and Chicken Foot. Each country boasts its own unique set of domino games: England enjoys Muggins (All fives), Scandinavian countries play Bergen, Mexico loves Mexican Train, and Spain favors Matador.

The origins of dominoes trace back to the Song Dynasty in China, with the game making its way to Italy in the 18th century. The evolution from Chinese dominos to the modern game remains somewhat mysterious.

General Rules of Dominoes:

Blocking Game:

The simplest dominoes variant is played between two players using a double six set. The 28 tiles are shuffled face down to form the stock or boneyard, with each player drawing seven tiles. The game begins with one player laying down their first tile, which initiates the line of play. Players take turns extending the line by matching adjacent tile ends. The game concludes when a player plays their last tile or when the game is blocked, with the winner being the player who caused the block.

Scoring Game:

In scoring games, points are earned for specific configurations or moves. Muggins (All fives) requires players to create open ends that sum to multiples of five, while in Bergen, points are scored when open ends match. Mexican Train awards 50 points for the double zero domino. A crucial rule is calling "domino" before laying a tile; failure to do so can result in picking up an extra tile if another player calls it out.

Draw Game:

The draw game allows players to draw additional tiles from the stock before playing. The game's score is calculated by the number of pips in the losing player's hand and the stock, often requiring at least two tiles to remain in the stock. This variant is commonly referred to simply as "dominos."
