Codenamed Project Orion, the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 will broaden the game's universe by adding a new city to explore alongside Night City. At Digital Dragons 2025 on May 20, Mike Pondsmith, founder of R. Talsorian Games and the original game's designer, provided fresh insights into the sequel's development.

Although Pondsmith's involvement in the upcoming title isn't as extensive as it was for Cyberpunk 2077, he remains actively informed about its progress. "I review the scripts," he mentioned. "Just last week, I visited various departments to see their latest work, such as new Cyberware designs, and shared my feedback."

He also confirmed that a second city is in development to complement Night City. "When I saw the concept, I immediately grasped the atmosphere they were aiming for," Pondsmith explained. "It doesn't have a Blade Runner vibe—it feels more like a twisted version of Chicago. I told them, 'Yes, this approach works.'"

In related news, CD Projekt Red (CDPR) posted several new job openings for Cyberpunk 2 earlier this year. One key role is for a Lead Encounter Designer, responsible for "designing and implementing engaging gameplay encounters that will captivate and excite players."

Notably, the position aims to achieve a breakthrough in gaming technology. A core responsibility involves "collaborating closely with the systems design team to develop the most realistic and dynamic crowd system seen in any game to date."

While details on Project Orion remain limited, the information shared by Pondsmith and CDPR's active recruitment efforts suggest that Cyberpunk 2 will build on its predecessor's rich world-building and complex narrative.

In other updates, CDPR has released new footage demonstrating the Cyberpunk 2077 port for the Nintendo Switch 2, showcasing the studio's optimization efforts for the upcoming handheld. The developer's website features several B-roll videos, totaling approximately 37 minutes, of the game running on the new hardware.

Earlier this year, during Switch 2 showcase events in New York and Paris, multiple reports highlighted performance issues with Cyberpunk 2077 on the device, including noticeable frame rate drops. According to Business Insider, "While playing such a demanding game on the Switch 2 is an interesting experience, it isn't the ideal platform for Cyberpunk 2077, as I frequently encountered frame rate issues."

However, CDPR Engineer Tim Green expressed satisfaction with the port's progress in an April 25 interview with Game File. "We haven't faced significant memory constraints, and the fast storage has helped resolve earlier data streaming challenges," he noted. "This has allowed us to concentrate on refining other aspects, and we're pleased with the outcome."

Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition is scheduled to launch on the Switch 2 on June 5, 2025. This version includes the complete base game, all post-launch updates, and the highly praised Phantom Liberty expansion. For the latest news and updates, be sure to read our detailed coverage below.
