Xbox Fans to Expect More Movie and TV Adaptations, Says Phil Spencer

by Sebastian May 04,2025

Despite the disappointing reception of the TV adaptation of Halo, Microsoft remains undeterred in its pursuit of bringing more of its video game IPs to the screen. Phil Spencer, the head of Microsoft Gaming, has expressed optimism about future projects in an interview with Variety. This comes as anticipation builds for "A Minecraft Movie," a cinematic adaptation featuring Jack Black, based on the popular sandbox game owned by Microsoft. Should the movie perform well, it could pave the way for sequels.

Microsoft's foray into video game adaptations has seen varied success. The "Fallout" series on Prime Video has been a major hit, with a second season already in the works. In contrast, the "Halo" TV show was canceled after two seasons due to poor reception. Spencer emphasized that Microsoft is learning from these experiences, which is boosting their confidence in future adaptations.

"We’re learning and growing through this process, which is giving us more confidence that we should do more," Spencer stated. He acknowledged that while not all projects will succeed, the insights gained from "Halo" and "Fallout" are invaluable. Spencer reassured the Xbox community that they can expect more adaptations in the future.

Speculation is rife about which Xbox game might be next in line for adaptation. In 2022, Netflix announced plans for a live-action film and an animated series based on "Gears of War," but updates have been scarce. Actor Dave Bautista has publicly expressed interest in playing Marcus Fenix in the film.

Given the success of "Fallout," there's speculation that Prime Video might consider an "Elder Scrolls" or "Skyrim" series. However, Amazon's existing fantasy shows like "The Rings of Power" and "The Wheel of Time" might make them hesitant to venture into another fantasy realm. Sony's successful "Gran Turismo" movie suggests that Microsoft might explore a "Forza Horizon" adaptation.

With Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard, possibilities include a "Call of Duty" movie or a new attempt at a "Warcraft" adaptation. Jason Schreier's book "Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment" revealed that projects for "Warcraft," "Overwatch," and "Diablo" were in development with Netflix but were abandoned. Microsoft could potentially revive these initiatives.

For a more family-oriented project, Microsoft's ownership of "Crash Bandicoot" could lead to an animated movie or series, following the successful model of "Mario" and "Sonic" movies. The upcoming reboot of "Fable" in 2026 might also inspire an adaptation.

Lastly, despite the failure of the "Halo" TV series, there's speculation about Microsoft attempting a big-budget movie adaptation of the franchise.

Microsoft's rivals, Sony and Nintendo, are also active in this space. Sony has seen success with "Uncharted," "The Last of Us," and "Twisted Metal," with plans for adaptations of "Helldivers 2," "Horizon Zero Dawn," and "Ghost of Tsushima." Nintendo boasts the highest-grossing video game adaptation with "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," and is working on a sequel and a live-action "The Legend of Zelda" film.
