Introducing ScratchJr, a vibrant and engaging programming platform designed specifically for kids aged 5-7! With ScratchJr, young children can dive into the world of coding by dragging colorful blocks to craft their own interactive stories and games. It's as simple as snapping together these blocks to make characters come alive with movements like jumping, dancing, and singing. Kids can also get creative by modifying characters in the paint editor, adding personal touches like their own voices and sounds, and even incorporating photos of themselves into their projects.

ScratchJr draws inspiration from the renowned Scratch programming language, which has empowered millions of older kids (ages 8 and up) worldwide. We've tailored ScratchJr to be perfectly suited for our younger audience, ensuring the interface and programming blocks align with their developmental stages—catering to their cognitive, personal, social, and emotional growth.

We believe coding is the new literacy of the 21st century. Just as writing helps you organize thoughts and express ideas, coding does the same. In the past, many thought coding was too challenging for the general public, but we're here to change that mindset. Coding is for everyone, just like writing!

As young coders use ScratchJr, they're not just playing with computers—they're creating and expressing themselves through technology. This process fosters problem-solving skills, project design, and the development of sequencing abilities crucial for future academic success. Moreover, ScratchJr integrates math and language learning in a fun and engaging way, boosting early numeracy and literacy skills. With ScratchJr, children are not only learning to code but also coding to learn.

ScratchJr is the result of a collaborative effort between the Developmental Technologies group at Tufts University, the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab, and the Playful Invention Company. The Android version was brought to life by Two Sigma, while the delightful graphics and illustrations were crafted by HvingtQuatre Company and Sarah Thomson.
